Steroids!!! Did Roger Clemens do it?
Did Roger Clemens use steroids? Did Barry Bonds use steroids? Yes, the steroid epidemic hit baseball, but I haven't seen too much of a backlash. Do you really care if Fernando Vina used HGH...I don't.
The real sad thing is that so many professional athletes are cheaters. When a CFO cooks the books to make a companies profits look better, they go to jail. Roger Clemens winning 5 Cy Youngs, Barry Bonds or Mark McGuire setting the single season home run record...they get on ESPN Sportscenter. Not really fare, is it?
I can't totally blame the players. The owners and the Players Association have turned a blind eye for way too long a time. If the owners truly cared about their game they would have addressed this situation before the government had to get involved. But as we now have seen, the bottom line is the almighty dollar. Players getting contracts, the PA getting player dues, the Owners getting the fans into the stands. In the end, it is the fans that lose when their sports heros are debunked as frauds and cheaters. Well, the user athletes will pay a price with their health eventually.
Did Roger Clemens take steroiods. Probably. Will I lose respect for all his accomplishments? Most definitely. Did baseball's lackadaisical approach to addressing the steroid issues hurt the game? It's put another nail in the coffin of indifference to baseball.
